For this assignment, we are supposed to draw and create marks based on the impression and emotions we get from listening to a piece of music. But, for the first question, we'll start form the basics. By only using lines and shapes, we are required to capture the essence of a piece of music in black and white. Without further ado, let's get started!

"Soulgazing" by Gregory and the Hawk

The faint nuances in the background was intended to capture the dreamy feel of the song, with contrasting shapes and curved lines to match the intense and upbeat chorus. It's a nice song, check it out!

"Je Te Veux" by Erik Satie, sang by Jessye Norman.

To portray the classy feel, I stenciled over a doily and also printed it with ink. The curvy osscilating lines were meant to be the voice of the singer, which was packed with vibrato. The faint shade of grey was meant to cohere the different parts of the painting together.

"I slept with Bonhomme at the CBC by Broken Social Scene.

This song was really dreamy and relaxing, so I added watery effects to match that feeling. I also felt a sense of connecting with someone, so I added faint lines between the circles.

"Not Safe" by Mortis Ghost.

This song have this really empty and eerie feeling, so I used black paper and left most parts empty. The uniform double squares are the two clanking sounds repeated throughout the song, with the occasional splashes symbolizing the banging noise. The white collage was to symbolize the eerie whispering and shushing noises. It's a good creepy atmospheric song, which although sounds empty, but gives a lot of feel.

"Vexations" by Erik Satie

I intentionally left lots of white space because the song itself is quite monotonous and gives you lots of food for thought. The strokes for the lines are also flat and uniform. But, there is one surprise.

The middle segment can be unfolded out three times as long, because the song itself is just about two lines long, but is meant to be repeated 840 times in succession.

"Asleep on a Train" by Mùm.

The uniform lines were made by printing cardboard and grooves of the straw, and also dragging ink with the edge of a cardboard. A sponge was used to make the cloudy effect. It was meant to look mechanical and harsh like the song.

I actually preferred this part over the second part of the question, because the black and white tone allowed me to explore, without straying off track. I did not have to worry about the colours since they are a tricky aspect haha. The quantity might look a little less compared to the others, but that is because I put in much more effort into completing each piece.
